![]() Worms 3D is a moderately successful attempt to transition the series from two dimensions to three, but it's both clumsy and lacking in innovation. They know their franchise well, but they're having a tough time evolving it. Team17 has crafted more than 30 Worms games. The 3D graphics pale in comparison to those of most other games on the market, but the worms have humorous animations and often don garb appropriate to their attacks, like a bandana for a kung fu punch or an army helmet for an artillery strike. Worms 3D continues the series' tradition of amusing audio, offering dozens of squeaky voice types, ranging from "Southern belles" to "Alien invaders" to "Teenage angst". One of the hallmarks of the Worms franchise has always been its comical presentation. The random maps ensure that the only advantage a player can carry from game to game is his or her wits. Multiplayer maps are randomly generated based on parameters the player chooses, such as maximum elevation, amount of land mass, and number of bridges. Multi-player games are completely customizable, allowing players to tweak variables such as arsenals, power-ups, and worm placement. It's all good practice for the much more engaging multiplayer games, which can be played on a single Xbox, over a LAN, or on-line. The lengthy single-player campaign mode does a good job of showing players how to exploit the game's massive collection of weapons and gear. A patient player can just keep planting explosives and eventually blast through any obstacle on the map to get to his or her target. ![]() Part of the fun comes in the game's fully destructible environments, which, rather impressively, have been carried forward from the franchise's 2D games. Or just skip all the funny business and haul out the trusty old bazooka. If you want to be creative, use a bouncing banana bomb or an exploding old woman. If an enemy is near an edge, use a baseball bat to knock him over it (or, better yet, accomplish the same result by simply poking him with your finger - a nonchalant move that adds insult to injury). If your worm is low on health and you want him to stay clear of enemy fire, it's probably best to keep him back and send in an air strike or use a homing missile. ![]() If there are a lot of worms in a small area, a stick of dynamite or a holy hand grenade (a nice nod to Monty Python and the ![]() Then you need to figure out how to attack. As in past Worms outings, Worms 3D is all about strategy, humour, and, most importantly, selecting the right tool or weapon for the situation.įirst you'll decide whether to use a jetpack to fly to a neighbouring island, a parachute to glide to a lower area, a ninja rope to haul your worm up a building, or a teleportation device to go anywhere you like on the map. Push a little more, and the reticule zips past the target before you can stop it.īut even with these substantial problems, Worms 3D can still be a blast to play - which says a lot about the core game. The double tap required for backflip jumps produces random results sometimes the worm will jump backwards, but just as often it will simply jump straight up or - worse - forward slightly, sending him soaring off a cliff to his death.Įven more annoying, the control stick sensitivity has been poorly calibrated, which makes aiming precision weapons nearly impossible. The issues with control aren't quite as bad as those with the camera, but they're close. The only thing that keeps the game playable is the much more intuitive first-person perspective used to launch attacks, and an overhead view employed to analyze entire maps. We can take manual control of the perspective, but that doesn't help much, since the camera won't move behind a worm if there's an object nearby-which, given the game's wonky environments, is pretty much all the time. It allows for splendid close-ups of the buildings' walls and mountain faces, but rarely provides a good angle of the worms we try to control. ![]() The transition from two dimensions to three hasn't been an easy one for developer Team17 the game is plagued with camera and control issues that were non-existent in their previous 2D efforts. ![]()
